Welcome to Existential Baroque

Felix Kindelán's paintings are reflections of a healing process. Based on their contemporary abstraction and a baroque narrative, they represent insights into existential challenges of an emotional nature and how to overcome them. We all share these challenges within all of our existences, regardless of gender, appearance and origin. Felix Kindelán's work is literally about looking under the skin, deep into the core of existence. We recognize figures that represent mental experiences of inner healing and spiritual growth. The abstraction of the figures, based on the muscular structures of the human body, symbolizes the complexity of emotions and personality patterns. With their elegance in movement, their vivid depth and the baroque composition, the passionate painter Felix Kindelán breathes as much of his life into the figures as possible. Through the dramatic play of strong contrasts between light and dark, he echoes his great mentor Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. The impasto application of paint reveals his enthusiasm for the expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Through the work of Francis Bacon, Felix Kindelán understood how to use his own life and the processing of experiences as a powerful source of inspiration.

The Berlin native was born in 1992 with German-Cuban roots. He completed an apprenticeship as a media designer for digital and print media in 2013. After his graduation, Felix Kindelán initially worked as a designer for an IT company in Berlin until he moved to Basel, Switzerland, in 2016. In Basel, his journey through life as a designer, illustrator and art director continued until 2021. Among other things, he worked for a local publishing house, where he designed numerous board games, children's and hiking books for the Swiss and global market. Felix Kindelán is a self-taught painter. Since the age of 15, he has taught himself in-depth knowledge of painting techniques, art history and anatomy. He got his start in art through Berlin's urban art scene, of which he was an active member for four years. His many creative phases of life and intensive self-study make his work unique, both externally and internally, and impossible to categorize. Felix Kindelán developed the term Existential Baroque in order to proclaim his vision of a new style through his work.
